How are the Free & Clear baby wipes whitened?

The Free & Clear Baby Wipes are whitened using a process called Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching. ECF uses chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine bleach to whiten wood pulp – a process that does not create appreciable levels of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds. This is the same process used by a majority of the baby wipes industry.

Our Original Free & Clear Baby Wipes are whitened with Total Chlorine Free (TCF) bleaching which uses hydrogen peroxide to whiten. The benefit of moving to the ECF fabric is that it is derived from more renewable resources which results in a decrease in the overall environmental impact of the product. This fabric uses 70% less plastic compared to the material used in the previous wipe. The previous fabric was 100% viscose (polymerized plastic) and the new material is 70% plant based.
